In recognition of the Memorial Day Holiday, thank you to all the military men and women who choose to be of service to our country in helping to protect our cherished freedoms. Please know you all are appreciated in many ways and from many directions. I would like to offer this poem for you! I may be citing our Air Force directly, because in my hiking treks I have the pleasure to watch our fighter jets practice, however, many, many thanks as well to our naval forces, armed forces and to the military veterans, especially for the work you do for us Americans that goes unrecognized for security reasons!
Hummingbirds
Hummingbirds in the sky
Hover and glide
And maneuver their ride
Over the valley
North of the mountainside.
Sideways down
A new way found
To discover the world
From an eagle’s eye.
I shall call you hummingbirds
Because you protect our sky
And our cherished freedoms.
You give to our country
In the blink of an eye.
This brings me joy,
For the feeling of safety
Within me resides.
Hail to you hummingbirds
Every time you fly by,
The top of Mount Tom
In the sky.
Remember God’s light
In your earthly flight
And the gifts He’s given you,
To perform your duties
In this space time.
Within the best of your ability
Use your gifts for reasons right
When you’re protecting our skies
Beneath the sun
And the stars at night.
Over America’s geographical light,
Thank you, thank you, thank you,
For your skillful flight.

Cindy, Have you ever visited the B-17 Memorial that is located on Mt Tom? It’s a beautiful tribute to 25 men who lost their lives coming back from World War 2. On July 9th 1946 a converted B-17G crashed into Mt Tom with all aboard. No one survived. If you travel down the road that comes down from the towers at the summit of Mt Tom, you will find it about half way down this same road. It can also be reached by way of the road that comes up from the Mt Park area off route 5 in Holyoke that leads up to the radio towers.
Your blog and Memorial Day tribute are beautiful.
Hi Brian Farrell! 🙂
Thank you for commenting on my blog! Who are you? I could imagine that you might be one of the pilots who flew the valley when I used to hike on the ledge! I always waved to the jets when I saw them! And yes. I visited the memorial. But which one? There are two. The one by the summit house and the one on the back road. Both of them, their presence, is very moving. Mt Tom is very special to me. Thanks again for visiting! Cindy.
